Sorocaba - São Paulo, Brazil
The Saint Scholastic School was founded in 1905 by the Tutzing Missionary Benedictine sisters, who arrived in Brazil two years earlier, starting their work in Olinda, Pernambuco. On September 28, 1905, they reached Sorocaba, brought by Baltazar Fernandes to provide spiritual and intellectual assistance. Their educational activities began in a room of Saint Benedict’s monastery, closed since Friar Barauna’s death in 1890. As the number of pupils grew, they moved to a larger house in Rosary Square, built in 1870 by enslaved hands. The school continues social services: Recanto Esperança do Menor (supporting deprived children), Habiteto (spiritual and material aid for families), vocational pastoral care, and sacramental preparation. Today, it offers kindergarten, nine years of primary education, and secondary school.
